I can't emphasize enough how important it is to build your online presence around the correct keywords for your business.

Before you can do the On-Page Optimization of your web pages or start doing the back links to your site to move you up the ranking to the first page, you must know what keywords you need to be optimized for.

The keywords to your website is based upon how people search for you. Generally there's one or two primary key searches people will use. Along with that, there are other ways people will search for you. Let me show you.

Using a dentist as an example, "dentist spokane" would be the primary search. If you optimized your website, however, for "Spokane dentists" you will have gotten it wrong. While there are searches for "spokane dentists", "dentist spokane" is the main search.

The order of the words is important. However, knowing people will search both ways, we will want to optimize your website for both.

Along with this "dentist" and "dentists" where the second one has an "s" at the end are two different keyword searches. In this example, there are twice as many searches for the non-plural version (spokane dentist). Add the "s" and you loose over 50% of the searches.

Then there's what's called "long tail" keywords. This would include searches like ...

• root canal spokane

• bleeding gums spokane
